What is PRA you may ask, well l am still finding out myself about the dangers of it, it is a form of blindness which Poodles and some other breeds are susceptable to. The reason l decided to have all my dogs tested is in my stupidity when l started breeding Poodles some three years ago, l knew nothing of it, as the last time l bred it was Cavaliers some 30 years ago all new to me, l had heard of at the time of a line of Cavies that was questionalble and the lady had bad breeding practises but no PRA or Parvo, BUT now well it is out there with avengences and steps must be taken to stop these nasty things from continuing.
l was taking a browse round Taunton boot fair about a year ago or so can't quite remember when exactly and came a cross a lady who had two Teacups Poodles, one was walking by her side and the other in her arms and of course l had to go over to see them, WELL to my horror the black one she was carrying had had it's eyes removed it really shocked me, the other was ok, both from the same litter what the heck l though had happened so l ask the lady futher questions, she was not happy at me asking, l couldn't understand why, but told her l to had Poodles she then started to warn me of the PRA danger, you could have knocked me down with a feather, l immediately felt this horrible fear for my own dogs what if any of them had this horrible PRA, so l asked a friend l had made through my site who breeds Minature Poodles she was so helpful and gave me all the information l needed at that present time, where to go etc, so then l had to find out more from my vet as l advise all people who want pups to do.
It appears that unless both parents are clear you cannot be sure that the whole litter is of this dreadful disease is clear, so both parents must be clear for whole litter to be BUT if one is a carrier and one clear only a small percent are carries, but you cannot tell which ones unless they are Optigen tested in America, it costs there is no doubt to test your dogs, but l feel a responsible caring owners do this or breeder as l have, l would no sell a pup who has PRA or carried it or breed from carries just in case someone was careless and bred one carrier to another from my lineage, that would be irresponsible to say the least and lets be honest there are a lot out there who do not care and would do such a thing.
So when looking for a pup ask if the pups are clear or a guarantee or certificate can be shown or other proof, be A CARING DOG OWNER AND DON'T SHED YOUR RESPONSIBILTIES, also check no in-breeding such as brothers or sister that is digusting but it is done don't go there it means faults or problems in the future, if you doubt me ask your vet he will give you proper medical advice, a pup may cost more to buy who has been from clean lines but come on quality is a price and what do you want a cheap pup from a puppy farm who may have loads wrong with it or a pup that costs just a bit more and will have no really bads problems or vets bills that go through the roof, come there are no quick cheap fixes be wise and look at what you are doing, pedigrees are good dogs, but make no mistake PRA can be found in a number of breeds, check out what you are doing.
It has has cost me a great deal of money to make sure my dogs ARE OK BUT THEY ARE WORTH IT EVERY PENNY, THEY WILL LIVE LONG LIVES WITH NO BLINDNESS.
l will be putting more information on this page as l am waiting on Val Tiller to give me her details for people to have the Optigen test done through her, don't be shy or afraid have your dogs tested go, check they are ok, this lady has been doing this for sometime in this country and sends all Blood samples for you to America, dig deep and look after your dogs properly.
Here are some recent photo's of my younger dogs, l took one dAy while trying out my sons new camera.
Apparently if one dog is a carrier and the other not you will get a litter of 75% clear of PRA and 25% will be carriers, so be warned. Is yours a carrier ?
